Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie has stated that he would be interested in directing Man of Steel 2 – if Henry Cavill asks him to.

It’s been five years since Cavill first donned the iconic superhero costume and fans have patiently waited to see him in another solo film. McQuarrie and Cavill recently worked together on Mission: Impossible – Fallout, and during an interview with CinePOP the filmmaker was asked about the prospect of directing the next Superman film:

“If Henry asked me to, sure, why not?”

McQuarrie was also asked whether he’d be interested in directing a superhero film in general:

“I feel like if the story was right and the character was right – I love working with Henry, Henry’s great.”

This isn’t the first time the two have talked shop, McQuarrie, whilst promoting the sixth Mission: Impossible film at CinemaCon spoke with ComicBook.com and revealed he and Cavill discussed Superman as a character and the franchise itself:

“Henry Cavill knows what it would be like. We had a lot of time hanging out on set, and Henry’s a huge fan of Superman. I can’t help but talk story to people, so he told me his take on Superman and I thought it was really great, and I gave him my two cents. The tweet you’re referring to is somebody asked ‘Would you do it?’ and I said ‘Hey, they know where to find me.’ Nobody’s asked, but you know.”

Meanwhile, Cavill revealed he’s already held discussions about a potential Man of Steel sequel, Cavill who has reprised his role in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League said:

“I’m having a lot of conversations, behind-the-scenes, with certain people and we will hopefully be having conversations with other people who are also behind-the-scenes to make things start happening. It is very much in my desire to do a Man of Steel 2, a direct sequel to Man of Steel, and there is a whole bunch of Superman story that I want to tell. There is a whole style of Superman’s character that I’m very keen to tell and I’m looking forward to the opportunity.”
