Following Joss Whedon’s departure from Batgirl writer Christina Hodson was hired by Warner Brothers to write the movie after impressing the studio with her Birds of Prey draft. Hodson writing Both Batgirl and Birds of Prey hopefully means that she has a distinct voice for Barbara Gordon and that the studio is very happy with how the character is shaping up on the page at least. While Christina Hodson’s script’s like Shut In and Unforgettable were both critically panned, her upcoming script for the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee is said to be very good so we will have to see how that film turns out. Side note, I find it interesting that Hodson’s Bumblebee will open opposite Aquaman this December. Variety reporter Justin Kroll revealed on Twitter that there were two competing Birds of Prey scripts and that the only constant characters in both were Barbara Gordon a.k.a Batgirl and Harley Quinn. Christina Hodson was on a podcast called Script Notes Podcast where she talked about writing screenplays and diversity in film. While she doesn’t talk about Birds of Prey it is interesting to hear about her experiences with writing, I highly recommend checking it out (the link to the podcast is embedded in the podcast title).
