Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who briefly appeared as Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in flashback scenes, recently opened up about returning to reprise his role in the DC Extended Universe in the upcoming Flashpoint movie.
Adapted from the 2011 miniseries of the same name, Flashpoint will star Ezra Miller, who made his debut as the Flash in last year’s Justice League. It was recently confirmed that Johnathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley will direct the film.
In the comic book version, Barry Allen travels back in time to prevent the death of his mother, Nora Allen. This sparks the creation of an alternate timeline, dubbed Flashpoint, in which a war between the Amazons and Atlanteans has destroyed most of the world, Kal-El never became Superman, and Bruce Wayne was murdered instead of his parents.
In the Flashpoint timeline, Thomas Wayne becomes Batman, while Martha Wayne is driven into madness following Bruce’s death and becomes the Joker. This version of Batman has no compunction about violence, as show by his willingness to kill any criminal that gets in his way.
Speaking with Total Film about returning as Thomas Wayne, Morgan sounded eager to put on the Batsuit.
“We’ll see. I mean, look, DC is DC, and they’ll figure out what they’re going to do next. But I’m highly aware of the character, I will say that. I’m highly aware of the character, and it would probably be a thrill of a lifetime to put on the Batsuit.”
Although it is unclear if he will be called upon to reprise his role, Morgan seems hopeful. He also expressed his interest in not just the idea of being Batman, but being the Thomas Wayne version known to fans.
“And what I know about the Flashpoint Batman is, you know, for me, I think he is not only the darkest of the Batmen, but the coolest. And I love his whole storyline and who he is and the tortured soul of it all.”
Flashpoint is set to enter production later this year. The events of the film are said to take place after Justice League, but it remains to be seen just how faithful the adaptation will remain to the source material.
Fans of Jeffrey Dean Morgan can see him appear as Negan on AMC’s The Walking Dead and in the upcoming film Rampage, which opens on April 13th.
