Mark Strong Confirms He’s Playing Doctor Sivana In ‘Shazam!’; Says He Has Unfinished Business With DC

English actor Mark Strong, best known for his roles in Kingsman: The Secret Service and 2011’s Green Lantern has confirmed his involvement in New Line/DC Films upcoming Shazam!.

Speaking with The List at the premiere of Cirque du Soleil ‘OVO’ at The Royal Albert Hall in London last night Strong confirmed his role in the film and how he had unfinished business with DC:

“I’m playing an evil bastard called Doctor Sivana, they are always the best characters to play, the most fun. I was Sinestro in Green Lantern which I though was a rather good film but it didn’t do what they wanted so I feel like I’ve got unfinished business in the DC world, I played a pretty evil character in that and he was meant to get even worse in the second one but that never happened but I think I’m going to get the chance to do that in ‘Shazam!’, I hope so.”

He revealed the studio are keeping the script closely guarded, as they have encrypted technology which makes the text disappear if you stop reading for “20 seconds”.

Shazam!

The film follows the story of Billy Batson, a young boy who can transform into an adult superhero by saying the magic word “Shazam!”.

Strong went on to say Shazam! reminded him of Big, with elements of Stranger Things:

“It’s a funny film, it’s about a young boy who can become a superhero but still remains a young boy so there’s elements of ‘Big’ there’s elements of ‘Stranger Things’. I think originally the comic outsold ‘Superman’ in the 1940s.”

Like with any superhero role, actors need to be in top physical shape and Strong has been hitting the gym.

“I’ve been training like a mad man, I’m about to go over and see the stunt guys, I’ve been trying all of these harnesses on and I think I’m going to be doing lots of flying around and firing electricity out of my hands.”

In November last year it was reported Strong was in talks to join the cast as villain Doctor Sivana.

However, unlike any of the other actors that joined Shazam!, it was never officially announced by the film’s director David F. Sandberg, who has a habit of welcoming new cast members on his Instagram account.

This was presumably down to contract negotiations still in the early stages. I don’t think it will be too long before Sandberg welcomes Strong onboard.

Shazam! will hit screens April 5, 2019
