Birds of Prey might just be one of my most anticipated movies on DC’s upcoming slate because I love the characters involved with this project.

Harley Quinn, Black Canary, and Huntress have been favourites of mine for a long time and with Black Canary and Huntress’s cinematic debut coming very soon I thought it was time to start casting. Bear in mind my casting choices are actresses that Warner Brothers might realistically consider, so unfortunately as much as I love the idea of Emily Blunt or Charlize Theron for Black Canary they’re probably too expensive since Warner Bros. wants to keep the budget low. The studio is also rumoured to be looking for actresses in the age range of 20 to 30 and are open to any ethnicity, so without further ado here are my choices for who should play Black Canary and Huntress.

Black Canary

Vanessa Kirby

One of the names that seems to be on top of Warner Bros. list for Black Canary is Vanessa Kirby. It’s no wonder why they want her considering just this year alone. She earned an Emmy nomination for her excellent portrayal of Princess Margret on The Crown and proved her range as an actress in blockbuster hit Mission Impossible: Fallout as the White Widow. She is also in the upcoming Fast and the Furious spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw. Kirby would make an excellent Black Canary and with critics and fans behind her, I believe she is not only a good choice but a smart choice.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw

It’s rumoured that Warner Bros is looking for a multiracial actress to play Black Canary, if that is true I think Gugu Mbatha-Raw could be an exciting choice. She has proven her ability as an actress in Belle which was received well by critics and appeared on fan favourite Netflix show Black Mirror. She also voiced the free-spirited maid turned feather duster Plumette in Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast and her performance in The Cloverfield Paradox was a true highlight in an otherwise unremarkable film. If Warner Bros. took a chance on her I trust she would deliver a great performance.

Nathalie Emmanuel

Another actress I think Warner Bros should consider is Nathalie Emmanuel who is very likable and charismatic. She has been in some huge hits such as Game of Thrones as Missandei and Fast and the Furious 7 and 8 where she played hacker Ramsey. While She has yet to be given a leading role in a major film or show I think she would do a great job as well as bring a more grounded down to earth vibe in contrast to Margot Robbie’s zany Harley Quinn.

Alicia Vikander

Alicia Vikander’s portrayal of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider made me a huge fan of her. She made Lara Croft a very likable and realistic female action heroine and although Tomb Raider was sadly unsuccessful at the box office it proved that Alicia would have no problem playing Black Canary. Warner Bros likes to keep their talent in-house and they made Tomb Raider (2018), so she already has connections with the studio. Her Oscar win for The Danish Girl and her critically acclaimed performance in Ex Machina would bring a prestige to Birds of Prey that I’m sure Warner Bros would be happy to have.
