DC Universe Finds It’s ‘Stargirl’ In ‘All Night’ Star Brec Bassinger

DC Universe’s Stargirl series has found its titular hero in actress Brec Bassinger. The 19-year-old actress will play the role of Courtney Whitmore.

Whitmore is described as a smart, athletic and above all else kind” high school teenager whose “seemingly perfect life hits a major speedbump when her mother gets married and her new family moves from Los Angeles, California to Blue Valley, Nebraska. Struggling to adapt to a new school, make new friends and deal with a new step-family, Courtney discovers her step-father has a secret; he used to be the sidekick to a superhero. ‘Borrowing’ the long-lost hero’s cosmic staff, Courtney becomes the unlikely inspiration for an entirely new generation of superheroes.”

Geoff Johns will pen the script for the series. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter will serve as executive producers alongside Johns. The 13-episode season will premiere in 2019.

Johns created Stargirl in 1999 had this to say when the show was announced at this years San-Diego Comic Con:

“Stargirl was the first character I created for DC. Most important, Courtney Whitmore was inspired by my sister who passed away. To have an opportunity to tell a story celebrating this superhero was literally the first thing I wanted to do because it is so personal to me. Also, a character that speaks to being young, to a legacy and to pushing forward seems so important to me nowadays.”

There have been two live-action versions of the character over the last few years, with Sarah Grey in Legends of Tomorrow and Britt Irvin on Smallville.
