Production for Matt Reeves’ The Batman movie hasn’t even started yet and fans have been taken through a rollercoaster of emotions ever since it was announced Ben Affleck will no longer be writing and directing the project. Every week it feels like Affleck will either star in The Batman or that he’s done with the role altogether.
Mind you the events of last year’s Justice League movie certainly hasn’t helped the situation. Clearly the root cause to all the outrage that occurs whenever a new rumour surrounding the film crops up is how the people who are actually involved in the project aren’t publicly talking about it. That’s understandable to me, Matt Reeves has been quietly working on the movie in his own personal Batcave. I like how he’s not in our faces and giving us an update on the movie every month. However, today he did decide to do just that. Finally, after months of circulating rumours we have some concrete information on The Batman.
In an interview during the Television Critics Association panel Reeves gave us our biggest update yet on the project by claiming he’s nearly done with the first draft of the script:
“We are working on getting our draft in the next couple of weeks and things are progressing. We have conceptual stuff going and coming into being and my head is totally in the script. In fact I’m going to be leaving right now (from the Beverly Hilton) to work on the script.”
He would then go on to state when he hopes they can actually start shooting the movie:
“What we’ve talked about is hopefully next spring or early summer, something like that.”
This is huge news. If everything goes according to plan we could potentially be looking at a 2020 release date for The Batman. With Birds of Prey set to start shooting early next year and the possibility of The Flash solo movie also starting production sometime next year we could have 3 major DC films in 2020.
The biggest question fans have about The Batman is whether Ben Affleck will return to the famous cowl. Well, Reeves in response to Affleck’s role didn’t give away too much saying he “is still in contact with Affleck” as he talked about where his movie is going to fit in with the rest of the universe:
“There are ways in which all of this connects to DC, to the DC universe as well. We’re one piece of many pieces so I don’t want to comment on that except to say that I’m focused very specifically on this aspect of the DC world.”
You can see how Reeves neither confirmed or denied any of the countless rumours on Affleck’s role in the project. Reeves talking about how connected the film is to the rest of the DC universe does give fans like myself some hope that Affleck will return to the role. Also most importantly he did state in this interview how he still talks to Affleck. With the studio looking to start shooting next Spring we should finally be getting our answer by the end of this year.
Last week Twitter was sent into an outrage when a rumour surfaced about Reeves potentially using Batman: Year One as a source of inspiration for the movie. Somehow this ended up turning into people thinking he was going to fully adapt the storyline for his movie. Thankfully he cleared up the whole situation today by claiming his Batman movie won’t be going this route:
“We’re not doing any particular [comic], Year One is one of the many comic books that I love. We are definitely not doing Year One. It’s just exciting to be focused very specifically on a tale that is defining for him and very personal to him. Obviously we’re not doing an origin tale or anything like that. We’re doing a story that is definitively Batman though and trying to tell a story that’s emotional and yet is really about him being the world’s greatest detective and all the things that for me, since I was a kid, made me love Batman.”
While updates on The Batman movie have been scarce I do feel like Matt Reeves has cleared up a lot of misleading information in this interview.
Hopefully, the next update we hear from Matt Reeves is about him getting ready to shoot or confirmation that Ben Affleck will be his Batman.
