Supergirl will be the first live-action TV series to feature a transgender superhero.
Actor and activist Nicole Maines, a transgender herself, will take on the role of Nia Nal, who becomes the superhero known as Dreamer. Nia will be part of the CatCo reporting team, who is described as a “soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others, Nia’s journey this season means fulfilling her destiny as the superhero Dreamer, much like Kara came into her own as Supergirl.”
In addition, there has been three other additions to the series, with Sam Witwer (“Smallville”), April Parker Jones (“The Last Ship”) and David Ajala (“Falling Water”).
Witwer has been cast in a series-regular role as Agent Liberty. Witwer’s character is the ruthless and terrifying founder and figurehead of Children of Liberty, a hate group that supports a human-first world order. He is described as “a brilliant orator in the guise of a family man”. What will be scary about him is how easily he can convince people that he is right. The DEO and Agent Liberty and his Children of Liberty are about to clash heads.
Parker Jones will play Colonel Hayley a hardline career military woman who lives and dies by the orders of her commanding officers. Dedicated to her country, she always acts in its best interest — even if it’s not her own.
Ajala joins the series as Manchester Black villain commonly associated with Superman. Manchester Black is described as “the type of guy who brings a knife to a gunfight and still walks away the winner. With a dark past, he easily deflects the brutality of his mission with his charm and sense of humor.”
