‘Shazam!’ Director Talks Golden Age Costume Design

Published

In the wake of the first official look at Shazam! during the 2018 Licensing Con in Vegas, director David F. Sandberg took to Twitter and answered a few questions from fans, giving them a small glimpse of the creative process behind the upcoming movie.

Fans took to Twitter to express some of their concerns about the suit and the reasoning behind the designs, along with asking Sandberg his thoughts on the DCEU.

I wanted him to feel a bit like an old fashioned super hero from the golden age of comics. Figured it would also make him stand out from the rest.

Another fan quickly followed up by asking chest thunderbolt emblem.

The director was quick to respond to the fans and reminded them about the process of making these kinds of movies.

We’re still working on the look of all that since it’s a post effect.

Another user raised some concern regarding how the DCEU movies have been received since the spawning of the shared universe, but again he answered with a quick funny and maybe sincere response.

Then I’ll say “guess super hero films isn’t my thing” and I’ll stick to horror 🤷‍♂️

We love to see more interaction from our directors, lest hope we continue to get these kinds of insight in the near future from him and other DCEU directors.

Synopsis:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam, courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana.
